Discovering Freedom in Sedona: A Journey of Empowerment

Welcome to Travel with First Class Ash! As a Black woman who loves adventure, I know the world can sometimes feel unwelcoming, but I’m here to show you that there’s beauty, joy, and empowerment in stepping out of your comfort zone. Today, I want to take you on my very first journey for this blog—a trip to Sedona, Arizona, a place where I rediscovered freedom, self-love, and strength.

Why Sedona?

Sedona isn’t the first place that pops into people’s minds when they think of travel destinations in the U.S., but it’s a hidden gem. Nestled in Arizona’s red rock country, Sedona is known for its breathtaking landscapes, healing energy, and vibrant sunsets. As a Black woman, I wanted to explore a destination that would help me reconnect with nature and myself, and Sedona did not disappoint.

The Journey

I landed in Phoenix on a warm, sun-soaked afternoon and rented a car for the two-hour drive to Sedona. As I drove, the city faded into desert landscapes, and the red rocks began to rise against the horizon. It was a moment of awe, a reminder of how vast and beautiful this world is.

Finding My Voice on the Trails

One of the first things I did in Sedona was hike the Cathedral Rock Trail. As I stood at the trailhead, looking up at the towering rock formations, I felt a mix of excitement and hesitation. Could I do this? I’d never been much of a hiker, and I wasn’t sure how I’d fare.

But as I climbed, I felt my confidence grow with each step. The higher I went, the more I realized that this hike wasn’t just about the trail—it was about reclaiming my voice in spaces that often don’t feel designed for Black women. Reaching the summit was exhilarating. I sat there, overlooking Sedona’s sprawling beauty, and felt an overwhelming sense of freedom. I belonged there. We belong everywhere.

Embracing Sedona’s Energy

Sedona is famous for its vortexes—places of concentrated energy that many believe can inspire healing and transformation. I visited the Bell Rock Vortex and spent an afternoon meditating. As the wind whispered through the rocks and the sun warmed my skin, I felt a deep sense of calm and clarity. It was as if Sedona was telling me: You are enough. You are powerful.

Connecting with the Community

Traveling as a Black woman can sometimes feel isolating, but Sedona’s community was welcoming and kind. I stayed at a local bed-and-breakfast run by a woman who shared stories about the area’s history and her own travels. Dining at small, family-owned restaurants, I felt a sense of connection to the people and the land. It reminded me that there are pockets of kindness and understanding everywhere—you just have to look for them.

Lessons Learned

Sedona taught me so much about myself and the world. It reminded me that fear is just an invitation to grow. It showed me that the world is wide and waiting for us to claim our space in it. As Black women, our voices and presence are powerful, and we deserve to experience the beauty and magic that travel brings.

To my fellow Black women: the world is yours. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Whether it’s a red rock trail in Arizona or a bustling city overseas, every destination has something to teach you. Step out, explore, and know that you are worthy of every adventure.
