Welcome back to Travel with First Class Ash! Today, I’m taking you to the soulful city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Known for its vibrant music, rich history, and incredible food, New Orleans is a destination that exudes culture and creativity. As a Black woman, my journey to this iconic city was not just a vacation—it was a celebration of resilience, joy, and community.
Why New Orleans?
New Orleans is a city that honors Black culture in every corner. From jazz music born in the streets to Creole cuisine crafted with love and history, it’s a place where heritage is alive and thriving. I chose New Orleans because I wanted to immerse myself in a destination that reflects the beauty and strength of Black people. And let me tell you, the experience was unforgettable.
The Arrival
Flying into Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, I could already feel the energy of the city. My first stop was the French Quarter, where colorful buildings, cast-iron balconies, and lively street performers welcomed me. I stayed at a boutique hotel just steps away from Bourbon Street, where the sounds of jazz and laughter filled the air.
Exploring Black Excellence
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Tremé neighborhood, one of the oldest African American communities in the United States. I spent hours at the Tremé’s Petit Jazz Museum, learning about the roots of jazz and its profound impact on American culture. The stories of Black musicians who revolutionized music left me inspired and proud.
I also visited the Whitney Plantation, located just outside the city. It was a sobering yet necessary experience, offering a deeper understanding of the history of slavery and the resilience of those who came before us. Walking through the grounds, I felt a mix of emotions: sadness, anger, and an unshakable sense of gratitude for the strength and sacrifices of my ancestors.
Indulging in the Flavors of New Orleans
Food is a love language in New Orleans, and every meal told a story. From gumbo to jambalaya, I indulged in dishes that were rich in flavor and history. At Dooky Chase’s Restaurant, a Black-owned establishment with a legacy of feeding both locals and civil rights leaders, I had one of the most memorable meals of my life. The warmth of the staff and the depth of the flavors reminded me of the power of food to bring people together.
Dancing Through the Streets
No trip to New Orleans is complete without music. I attended a second line parade, a joyful and soulful tradition where brass bands lead the way and people dance behind them in celebration. As I joined the parade, moving to the rhythms of the drums and trumpets, I felt completely free. It was a reminder that joy is resistance, and we deserve to celebrate our lives unapologetically.
Lessons Learned
New Orleans taught me the importance of honoring our past while celebrating our present. It reminded me that Black culture is not just history; it’s alive, dynamic, and influential. As I walked through the streets, danced to the music, and tasted the flavors, I felt deeply connected to my roots and inspired to keep exploring the world with pride and purpose.
