Welcome back to Travel with First Class Ash! This time, let me take you to a destination that combines sunshine, culture, and pure relaxation: Miami, Florida. Known for its pristine beaches, vibrant art scene, and rich blend of cultures, Miami was the perfect place for me to unwind and recharge. As a Black woman, this journey wasn’t just about soaking up the sun—it was about finding peace and joy in my own skin.
Why Miami?
Miami is a city that celebrates diversity and radiates warmth—both literally and figuratively. With its turquoise waters, endless stretches of sand, and bustling streets filled with art and music, Miami feels alive. I chose Miami because I wanted a destination where I could relax, feel glamorous, and experience a slice of Caribbean culture without leaving the U.S. And trust me, Miami delivered.
The Arrival
As I stepped off the plane at Miami International Airport, I was greeted by a wave of humidity and excitement. The city’s energy was infectious. I stayed at a chic hotel in South Beach, just a block away from the ocean. The Art Deco architecture of the neighborhood was like stepping into a living postcard, and I couldn’t wait to explore.
Finding Solace by the Water
The first thing I did was head to South Beach, Miami’s most iconic shoreline. Walking barefoot on the soft, white sand and listening to the gentle crash of waves was instantly calming. I claimed a spot under a striped beach umbrella and let the ocean breeze wash over me. As the sun kissed my skin, I thought about how important it is for Black women to take time for rest and self-care. Sitting there, I realized: I deserve this.
Later, I ventured to Key Biscayne, a quieter, more secluded beach just a short drive from the city. Surrounded by palm trees and crystal-clear water, it felt like my own private paradise. I spent the afternoon reading a novel and letting the worries of the world melt away.
A Dive into Art and Culture
Miami isn’t just about beaches; it’s a cultural hub. I spent a day exploring the Wynwood Walls, an open-air museum filled with breathtaking street art from artists all over the world. The vibrant murals were a testament to the power of creativity and self-expression.
I also visited Little Haiti, a neighborhood that felt like a slice of the Caribbean. From the colorful markets to the soulful sounds of live music, it was a beautiful reminder of the strength and resilience of Black culture. I even took a dance class, learning traditional Haitian moves that left me feeling both exhausted and exhilarated.
Savoring the Flavors of Miami
Food in Miami is an experience in itself. I indulged in fresh seafood, Cuban sandwiches, and tropical smoothies that tasted like sunshine in a glass. My favorite meal was at a Black-owned restaurant in Overtown, where the fusion of Caribbean and Southern flavors felt like a warm embrace. Every bite was a reminder of the beauty of cultural blending and the stories food can tell.
Lessons Learned
Miami taught me the value of balance—of finding moments of serenity amidst the hustle. It showed me that self-care is not selfish; it’s necessary. As Black women, we often carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, but places like Miami remind us to put ourselves first, even if just for a little while.
My Message to You
To my fellow Black women: Miami is calling your name. It’s a city where you can bask in the sun, dance to your own rhythm, and reconnect with yourself. Whether you’re lounging on the beach or exploring its cultural gems, Miami has a way of making you feel alive and at ease.
